MOD Awards £30 Million Parachute Contract to Irvin-GQ - May 2005
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded a contract worth some £30 million to Irvin-GQ for the maintenance and repair of parachutes for the United Kingdom's Airborne Forces.

The contract, between Irvin-GQ and the MOD's Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), will deliver savings of some £5 million during its 10-year life. The contract award marks the culmination of a joint project during which time both parties have worked closely to embrace a partnering approach to develop a firm foundation for the future.

The DLO's Survival & Airborne Delivery Integrated Project Team based at RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire, will manage the project. A DLO spokesman said:

"This is the first stage in our Total Support Package with Irvin-GQ, allowing both parties the opportunity to jointly develop new ways of working and introduce process improvements that will identify gain-share opportunities. This contract will achieve better value for money for British taxpayers through greater effectiveness."

The introduction of jointly developed management techniques and improved business processes will ensure that the UK Airborne Forces receive improved parachute availability. Efficiencies will be achieved primarily by means of a smarter joint approach to managing the contract, more rigorous monitoring of performance and a proactive commitment by both organisations to continuous improvement.

Welcoming the award of the contract, the Managing Director of Irvin-GQ, Philip Thomas said:

"This contract clearly demonstrates a willingness to embrace change. It consolidates the Logistic Support side of our business but also presents new opportunities for growth. We are delighted that the DLO chose Irvin-GQ to pioneer this new concept in contracting with industry.

Future phases of this project will include Product Support, Contracting for Descents and the Overall Management of the Spares Inventory related to the UK Airborne Forces.
